No matter which type of cooling tower you encounter, you must protect it against corrosion. The most common type of corrosion seen in cooling towers is what's known as "white rust." White rust (which is a build-up of zinc oxide), most commonly occurs in galvanized steel cooling towers and is directly related to the water quality and treatment which can build up quickly if pH levels are off and water treatment is not done properly.

Another concern with cooling towers is scale formation. Scale occurs when deposits get clogged in pipes, usually caused by cold water high in minerals combining with heat. Scale deposits can clog and slow down the cooling system – making it much less effective, and much more expensive. In fact, the removal of scale deposits each year is one of the biggest expenses when it comes to cooling tower maintenance.

The safest and best way to preserve the life of a cooling tower is to prevent scale, corrosion and even bacteria formation. HydroAnalytix offers a comprehensive cooling tower treatment regimen that will deliver these benefits.

Even after the best and most appropriate external treatment of the water source, boiler feed water (including return condensate) still contains impurities that could adversely affect boiler operation. Internal boiler water treatment is then applied to minimize the potential problems and to avoid any catastrophic failure, regardless of external treatment malfunction.  Once feed water quality has been optimized with regards to soluble and particulate contaminants, the next problem is corrosive gases. Dissolved oxygen and dissolved carbon dioxide are among the principal causes of corrosion in the boiler and pre-boiler systems. The deposition of these metallic oxides in the boiler is frequently more troublesome than the actual damage caused by the corrosion. Deposition is not only harmful in itself, but it offers an opening for further corrosion mechanisms as well.

Where economizers are installed, good deaerating heater operation is essential. Because oxygen pitting is the most common cause of economizer tube failure, this vital part of the boiler must be protected with an oxygen scavenger, usually catalyzed sodium sulfite. In order to insure complete corrosion protection of the economizer, it is common practice to maintain a sulfite residual in the feed water and, if necessary, feed sufficient caustic soda or neutralizing amine to increase the feed water pH.

When choosing an internal treatment program, many factors must be considered. However, one point remains extremely important. Any boiler opening wiII be an outstanding event if proper control and situational responses have been carried out in an effective manner. The final choice should be a program with excellent control that plant operators are most comfortable with. In addition, it should be a cost-effective program. HydroAnalytix treatment programs are targeted to prolong equipment life using the most current technology. These high performance programs protect and enhance equipment performance while providing energy and cost savings through improved heat transfer efficiency, optimized cycles of concentration, and promote environmental stewardship.
